ST. KITTS AND NEVIS (WINN) — Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda hailed the inaugural flight of LIAT 2020 as a major milestone that marks the airline’s rebirth as a vital link in regional integration.

Mr Brown highlighted the challenges of travelling in the region since the collapse of LIAT 1974 Limited, including high fares and logistical difficulties.

Antigua and Barbuda’s new partnership with Nigeria’s Air Peace has paved the way for LIAT 2020 to fly to St. Lucia for the first time, marking the airline’s official relaunch. Under this new arrangement, Air Peace will provide four aircraft, while the Government of Antigua and Barbuda is preparing three additional aircraft currently undergoing maintenance.

“We have truly seen LIAT rise like a phoenix from the ashes. I have no doubt that based on the quality of the staff and the services that will be provided, LIAT will truly be at the top of the food chain and become the number one carrier in our region.”

Brown also highlighted the economic benefits of the revival of the airline, which will be headquartered in Antigua and Barbuda.

“LIAT will make a significant contribution to our country’s economy. It’s important from the perspective of creating jobs and generating airport taxes. But also, it’s very important to the tourism product to and from Antigua and Barbuda.”

He expressed optimism about LIAT’s future profitability and its potential to contribute positively to the economy. “Even if the airline faces challenges in terms of profitability, I believe it will still be a net economic benefit to Antigua and Barbuda,” Brown added.

The inaugural flight was fraught with challenges, including the refusal of some OECS ministers to work together to ensure the airline’s viability for intra-regional travel.

“Many opponents, including the prime ministers of the Eastern Caribbean Group of States, have been singing the death song of LIAT, and at least one of them has come full circle and said we need LIAT. So, we are really glad to be here this morning.”

Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez
Hafsah Adbulsalam, CEO of LIAT 2020, is committed to transparency and efficiency. Adbulsalam pledged to ensure safe and efficient operations.

LIAT 2020 will initially serve Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Lucia and Barbados. Further expansion is expected to include Saint Kitts and Nevis soon.
