The Judicial and Legal Services Commission has announced the appointment of eight new foreign judges to fill vacancies in the Papua New Guinea judiciary.
The announcement was made today by the Commission’s Chairperson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Pira Niningi.
“With the establishment of the Court of Appeal, it is vital that all vacancies in the judiciary are filled by appointing more new judges to ensure access to justice in all provinces and territories of Papua New Guinea,” the Minister said.
The minister announced that of the eight judges appointed, five are new appointees while the other three are reappointed. They will serve for a three-year term.
“The appointees are the best and most suitable candidates with outstanding performance records. As Chairperson of the Commission, I am pleased to announce the appointment of eight foreign judges to the Commission for a three-year term,” Minister Niningi said.
He said the judiciary currently has 39 judges and these appointments will help the judiciary to have judges to hear cases in areas where the judiciary needs involvement. Overall, this will improve access to justice for Papua New Guineans.
