A Boeing 747 cargo plane bound for Los Angeles returned to Narita International Airport, one of Tokyo’s two airports, for an emergency landing yesterday, causing one of the runways to be temporarily closed.
Atlas Air Flight 7106 returned to the airport at 1:10 a.m. after detecting a hydraulic system failure.
According to Japan’s Kyodo News Agency, the Boeing 747 aircraft had a flat tire and a broken wheel. Due to the accident, the airport’s Runway A was closed for about 7 hours.
The Ministry of Transport’s airport office said the cargo plane’s seven crew members were not injured.
The incident happened hours after a Singapore Airlines Boeing 787 experienced technical problems during landing at the same airport on Monday, resulting in the closure of the airport’s Runway B for about 50 minutes.
None of the 276 passengers were injured.
Firefighters spotted white smoke coming out of the commercial plane’s left engine after landing, and Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said tire debris was found on the runway where the plane landed.
