On Friday, July 19, 2024, the Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance of Niger, Mr. Ali Mahamane Lamine Zaina, met with the outgoing IMF Resident Representative in Niger, Dr. Lasmane Ouedraogo. The meeting was an opportunity to discuss the fruitful partnership between Niger and the international financial institutions.
At the end of the meeting, Dr. Ouedraogo announced that he had conveyed the IMF’s congratulations to the Prime Minister on the approval of the fourth and fifth reviews of the Facility and Extension of Credit Programs. These programs were approved by the IMF Executive Board on July 17, 2024, with a disbursement of US$ 71 million (approximately 43 billion CFA francs) for Niger. He stressed that the implementation of these programs was very satisfactory and congratulated the Nigerien Government for its consistent approach to reform.
Dr. Ouedraogo thanked the Government and people of Niger for the warm reception he received during his visit. He assured that the IMF will continue to support Niger despite the end of its mission. “We will always have Niger at heart,” he said, stressing that the IMF wants to maintain a strong partnership with the country.
The meeting underscored Niger’s commitment to continuing its economic reforms and strengthening its collaboration with the IMF. IMF financial and technical support has been critical to Niger’s economic development, and this collaboration is expected to bear fruit in the coming years.
