Another round of summer camps came to an end today. As we reported last Wednesday, the children learned all about budgeting and saving at the Financial Literacy Camp. The scholarship component of the program ended today with a short ceremony to honor the students who participated. Today at ITVET we spoke to 3 students who told us how rewarding their experience at the camp was.
Arin Riley – PeaceWorks Enterprise Program Manager
“This course that we have at ITVET is a special part of the Belize Project program. This course that ITVET has is a scholarship course. It’s made up of students from the Youth Leadership Council and we split them into two courses. They have a financial literacy and entrepreneurship course and a high school innovation course. This morning we heard from seven high school innovation challenge teams who presented a case study that covered youth unemployment in Belize. So we were able to sit down and listen to all of their presentations this morning and hear their ideas and we also have a financial and knowledge entrepreneurship course that covers job skills, resume skills, interview skills and budgeting, saving and general financial literacy entrepreneurship courses.”
Angie Robato – Coordinator
“We saw today how ingenious these kids are. In three days, they came up with seven different solutions to the unemployment problem in Belize – ideas that I think could be implemented.”
Jemuel White – Summer Camp Student
“It’s a really great camp because you can learn so many things in those three days that are so valuable to you. One thing I learned is that confidence is the key to almost everything because once you have a positive attitude and avoid all the negativity, you can overcome anything. You can start the day the right way, you can overcome challenges, you can overcome anything.”
Courtney Weatherburn
“What can you learn or take away from this experience?”
Marqueem McKay – Summer Camp Student
“Public speaking makes life better. Because if you don’t speak publicly, you can’t really say what you want to believe and what you want to do.”
Courtney Weatherburn
“So please tell us more about this experience. What was the summer camp like? Especially in terms of financial literacy.”
Marqueem McKay – Summer Camp Student
“It was a really great camp, I learned a lot about savings and how to navigate a bank and how everything you want to put into life you have to have savings so you can look to the future and finance it.”
Maria Gabriel – Summer Camp Student
“It was my first time and I had a really great time. I also met the instructor, Julian Griffin, who is a really good instructor. She taught me things that I knew but wasn’t quite sure about.”
Courtney Weatherburn
“Like what?”
Maria Gabriel – Summer Camp Student
“Some things, like when I have an idea, I don’t really express it, but when she asks me, I tell her and she says: Yeah, you can do it, Maria. So she built my confidence and made me understand that if I don’t believe in myself, no one will believe in me, so I have to start with myself so that I can do better.”
A total of more than 40 high school students participated in this scholarship event, which lasted for 3 days.
