Who can forget that terrible Thursday, September 24, 2014, when Belize Special Constable Danny Connocky was killed while on duty in Caracol Archaeological Park in western Belize, just meters from the border? It was suspected—but never confirmed—that his killers were Guatemalan cross-border bandits who may have fled to the Guatemalan village of La Rejoya?

His murder shocked the nation and forced the Ministry of State Security to impose strict security measures on the Karakol site, an emergency revealed by an internal police memo that pointed out the clear and present danger faced by the special police officers forced to guard the site, but the police apparently ignored it.

Ten months after the tragedy, the Government, through the NICH, completed a protection outpost at the Caracol Archaeological Reserve. Built in close collaboration with the Ministry of National Security, the protection outpost will be able to house a number of Belize Defense Force soldiers who will provide support and backup to the Tourist Police.

The new facility is expected to be inaugurated on Friday, and we will be present at the ceremony.
