“There were about 180 of us Greeks. Some managed to escape from the rear of the phalanx where we were. In other words, 25 of us were ‘lucky’ to be captured and not killed,” he initially told Thanos Siafarkas, while adding the following chilling detail: “After a week, they rounded us up with a herd of goats and drinking water, water from the well and a piece of bread – like a cell phone of that size – and three olives a day for a week. Then they transferred us to the prison in Amatea, and then, because there were other prisoners who fought and so on, the prison was full, they put us in Amatea, deep in Turkey. I was there for 94 days – it was like yesterday – from July 23rd – and then I returned on October 27th.”
As for the conditions of detention in the prisons, Mr. Eleftheriou stressed: “We should know that there are a lot of Turks, they have a very organized army, politicians, etc. They will definitely wage a huge psychological war against us. In other words, be prepared, tomorrow you will go to Cyprus, we will release you, after daybreak you will stay, you will work in the warehouse, you will never go, Cyprus is full of Turks, etc. (…). There was also repeated violence, but not systematic torture as we thought, but in every transport, even in the courtyard, once a day when we went out, in the corridors, any Turk who wanted to hit us hit us wherever he wanted. In other words, we took a punch, a kick every day. There is a reason for this, we are barbarians. This is how they transfer it to the population. ”
At the end, deeply moved, he declared: “I have not yet overcome what I have been through. Sometimes I also put up a fight in my sleep. Even now. It is unbeatable. This will stay with me for the rest of my life.” Speaking now of how he managed to return, he characteristically said: “Luckily, we Greeks also had prisoners. An exchange was made. At some point we also had a lot of prisoners, and the Turks were also forced, and they were collecting prisoners so that they could exchange an equal number of prisoners.”
