Kuala Lumpur: Gas Leak On Thursday (July 4), 39 people were reported sick at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport engineering area. Malaysian emergency services officials said.
“A total of 39 victims suffered symptoms of dizziness and nausea,” local rescue worker Muhammad Nur Khairi Samsumin said in a statement.
He added that 24 victims had been discharged from hospitals, 14 more were being treated by air crash ambulance units and one was hospitalized.
All those affected worked for the three companies that operated the plant.
The incident did not affect air traffic at the country’s major airports.
Mohammed Noor said the leaked gas was identified as methyl mercaptan and came from an “unused tank” at the facility.
“Emergency crews are sealing the leak,” he said, adding that the tanks would be removed and disposed of.
Mohammad Noor said methyl mercaptan was added to LPG to give it a smell that alerted people to leaks. The gas has a strong odor similar to rotting cabbage.
