The APS learned from official sources on Thursday that 24 fishing vessels were boarded between January and July 2024 for various violations.
“From January to July 2024, a total of 24 fishing vessels were boarded for various violations such as fishing in restricted areas, illegal transshipment of fishery products, unauthorized fishing, failure to hold a fishing license, fishing and possession of immature fish species,” said the Ministry of Fisheries and Ports Infrastructure.
In a press release sent to APS, the Ministry noted that “the planned fines range from 400,000,000 FCFA to 599,000,000 FCFA Senegal, in accordance with the provisions of Law 2015-18 of July 13, 2015”.
The text adds that “severe measures are taken against offenders in accordance with current regulations” and notes that “103 million CFA francs have been paid to the Public Treasury for the fines announced in 2023”.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Port Infrastructure also said that it had taken the initiative through the Directorate of Fisheries Protection and Monitoring (DPSP) and was now drawing public attention to the figures on the number of fishing vessels boarded and the amounts paid. The fines will be paid to the Senegalese Public Treasury in order to increase transparency “.
“This decision aims to share and inform actions taken to effectively combat illegal and unregulated fishing (IUU), but above all to protect the resources,” the press release explains.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Port Infrastructure reminded those engaged in artisanal and industrial fishing of the “importance of complying with current regulations”.
“The ministry ensures that stakeholders can work together so that Senegal can continue to benefit as much as possible from fisheries and its related activities.”
