Tonight, there is an active human trafficking case being investigated in Belize City. A 21-year-old Indian national managed to escape and reported to police that he was forced to work in poor conditions and was not paid. The victim reported that when he came to Belize, he was promised that he would work five days a week, eight hours a day, and his family in India would receive six hundred Belize dollars a month. He was also promised shelter, food, and transportation expenses. When he arrived in Belize in January 2022, nothing he had been promised was true. He told authorities that he was working 17 hours a day, seven days a week, his passport was confiscated, and he was not allowed to use his phone. He added that when he asked three times for the money he was promised, he was assaulted. He eventually managed to escape in November 2022 and reported to police. Police investigated and today, the alleged trafficker was arraigned in court. Harish Kishanchand, a 46-year-old man living on Church Street, was charged with one count of human trafficking. He did not enter a plea and the DPP did not object to bail. Bail was set at $6,000 with two sureties, on condition that he surrender his travel documents and not interfere with the victim. He is due to appear in court again on September 30.
