The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) continued to lead the medal table on day four of the 2024 Marshall Islands Micronesian Games, winning a total of 26 gold medals, 14 silver medals, and 10 bronze medals.
The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands also nearly swept the third day of competition, winning nine of 11 games after winning four gold medals the day before.
Nauru came in second with 16 gold medals, 10 silver medals and two bronze medals, while the host Marshall Islands came in third with six gold medals, five silver medals and nine bronze medals.
The Marianas Games team won a total of 50 medals, surpassing the total medals achieved by the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands at the 2018 Micronesian Games held in Yap (9 medals, 18 medals and 9 medals).
The Northern Mariana Islands national swimming team continued to lead the way, winning all 10 gold medals at the Kwajalein Atoll swimming pool on Kwajalein Island in the Marshall Islands on Tuesday. They also collected four silver medals.
Maria Batallones led the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands swim team to a perfect 5 wins in 5 events yesterday, despite not having a real swimming pool in her hometown.
She was the first member of the gold medal-winning mixed 200-yard medley relay team, joining Kean Pajarillaga, Isaiah Aleksenko and Frances Raho (1:44.03).
Batalones then won the women’s 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:57.94. Teammate Shokol Litulumal finished second with a time of 5:11.73.
She then won gold in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.62 and then in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:09.05.
Batalones teamed up with Rajo, Litulumal and Sari Barman to win the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:43.31, her fifth gold medal of the day.
Meanwhile, Aleksenko won the men’s 400-yard individual medley yesterday in 3:59.68, adding to his four gold medals at the Micro Games. Watanabe Kotei took silver in 4:26.01.
He also won the men’s 100-yard freestyle in 45:00, and later won the men’s 800-yard freestyle (7:16.29) with Pajarilaja, Yuta Watanabe and Justin Ma.
Meanwhile, Rajo won the women’s 50-yard backstroke in 28.95 seconds, her first individual gold medal of the Games. Lithulumal finished second in 29.29 seconds.
Watanabe won his first individual gold medal in the men’s 100-yard backstroke in 59.66 seconds, while Pajarilaja won the fourth silver medal of the day for the Northern Marianas Islands in the men’s 50-yard backstroke.
The Northern Marianas also won two bronze medals in beach volleyball, three silvers in weightlifting and three bronze medals. Kathy Winkfield and Aurora Santos defeated the host Marshall Islands in the women’s beach volleyball third-place match, while Dylan Mister and Jermaine Salas defeated Kiribati in the men’s beach volleyball third-place match.
Weightlifter Riella Ichiuo won three silver medals in the 76kg category, while Northern Mariana flagbearer Antonette Labausa won three bronze medals in the 81kg category.
