Serbian athlete Lazar Djukic died on Thursday during the Lake Day, the first swimming competition of the 2024 CrossFit Games in Fort Texas, USA, according to an official press release obtained by the event management from LeParisien.

Djukic was participating in a combined running and swimming challenge and was found dead in Marin Creek Lake after being seen struggling in the water near the finish line.

The CrossFit Games organization expressed its deep condolences over the incident and pledged to fully cooperate with the authorities to understand the circumstances of this tragedy. Other tests planned for the day have been suspended. The organization said on X that the well-being of the participants is our top priority and “we are heartbroken following this tragic incident.”

Djukic was known for competing in the first four CrossFit Games, and the community of athletes he left behind was saddened by the loss. After a search by boats and divers, the athlete’s body was finally recovered, capping a dark day for the competition.
