A group of officials, including the secretary of the Eksath Lanka Podujana Pakshaya party, have been arrested for demanding a bribe from the party’s presidential candidate and former PUCSL president Janaka Ratnayake.
They were reportedly arrested today by Bribery Commission officials while accepting a bribe of Rs 3 crore from the party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Ratnayake.
The suspects were arrested based on a complaint filed by the former PUCSL chairman, who this morning deposited the bond in the name of the party’s presidential candidate.
Those arrested include the secretary of the United Lanka People’s Party, who are accused of trying to extract a bribe of 30 million rupees from Ratnayake in exchange for him becoming the party’s presidential candidate.
Janaka Ratnayake, former chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), is contesting the presidential election this year as a candidate of the Eksath Lanka Podujana Pakshaya Party.
United Lanka Podujana Party secretary Nihal Premakumara Deshapriya has deposited the security deposit with the Election Commission on behalf of Janaka Ratnayake this morning (14th).
