A Louisiana A father awoke to find his two-year-old son dying from a gunshot wound after the child pulled a weapon from under his pillow while the father slept.
Devonte Chambers, 29, told police he took the young boy into the bedroom of a Baton Rouge home for a nap and smoked marijuana just before 2 p.m. Sunday.
Chambers then fell asleep while watching a movie and the child saw the gun’s magazine sticking out from under a pillow at the Sola Street home.
Paramedics found the toddler, also named Devonte, with a bullet hole in his upper torso and rushed him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“The father pulled out a gun and his 2-year-old son accidentally shot himself while playing with the gun,” said Officer L’Jean McNeely of the Baton Rouge Police Department.

Chambers’ grandfather, Richard Brown, was cooking in the family’s kitchen when he heard a gunshot and saw his grandson emerge from the bedroom holding the mortally wounded boy. He told WVLA.
He said, “Oh my God, my child was shot, please God forgive me.”
“I feel really sad about this.”
Police said the gun, which Chambers purchased and had an extended magazine, may have been exposed from under the pillow.
Chambers was arrested and charged with manslaughter at the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail, where his bond is currently set at $75,000.
Less than five months earlier, 15 blocks south, another Baton Rouge parent was awakened by gunfire. Her youngest son shot himself Use of unsafe weapons.
Arianna Scott, 22, who kept the gun in a closet at her 69th Avenue home, told police she was awakened by gunfire at 9:30 a.m. March 20.
Prosecutors said she called out to the four-year-old boy but went back to sleep after hearing no response.
When Scott finally stood up, she found the boy badly injured, with a bullet hole in his shoulder.
The mother had tried to claim she didn’t know where the gun came from because she has a felony criminal record, WBRZ reported.
She later admitted to keeping the unlocked handgun in a bedroom closet, but she didn’t know how the four-year-old had access to it, police said.
When police arrived on scene and found the gun, they obtained a search warrant for Scott’s home.
They found a loaded .40-caliber Glock pistol, equipped with a “switch” that converts the gun to an automatic weapon, and a shell casing in the boy’s bedroom.
Police found a large bag of marijuana that had been put into smaller bags for distribution.

Around 9:30 a.m. on March 20, the boy shot himself with an unlocked, illegally modified handgun at Scott’s home in Baton Rouge.
Scott again tried to spin a story claiming it was from her boyfriend’s personal collection, before later admitting she knew it wasn’t for personal use.
Louisiana does not have a law requiring that guns be secured in the home.
But police charged Scott’s parents with improper supervision of a minor, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a machine gun.
