Lucknow, India: At least 18 people were killed and 19 injured when a bus collided with a milk tanker in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in the early hours of Wednesday (July 10), police said.

“Eighteen people were killed and 19 injured when the bus hit the tanker from behind,” Zulfiqaar Ali of the area police chief’s office told AFP.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called the crash “heartbreaking”.

According to NDTV, a New Delhi television station in India, the bus was heading to the capital New Delhi from the eastern Indian state of Bihar.

Road traffic accidents are frequent in India, and the government estimates that the number of road traffic deaths will reach 168,000 in 2022.

In May this year, a bus rolled into a deep ravine in Indian-controlled Kashmir, killing at least 21 people and injuring more than 50.
