All the bank accounts of Abdul Awal Mintu, vice chairman of BNP Paribas and a well-known businessman, have been activated after 17 years. Meanwhile, all the accounts of his wife Nasreen Fatema Awal and younger son Tabith Awal have been activated.

The bank accounts have been activated in view of the letter sent by Bangladesh Bank to this effect to the Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the State Board of Revenue on Thursday.

On Saturday, a CIC official who did not wish to be named said that Abdul Awal Mintu had written to the NBR chairman through his lawyer, seeking withdrawal of the suspension of his bank accounts. After examining the legal aspects of the letter, his bank accounts were ordered frozen. Mintu and his family’s bank accounts were ordered frozen due to corruption cases during the previous caretaker government.

The bank accounts of Abdul Awal Mintoo and his family were summoned during the caretaker government on August 1, 2007. After the Awami League came to power, Abdul Awal Mintoo was repeatedly asked to activate the bank account of NBR but failed.

Earlier on August 19, the bank account of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was activated after 17 years.
