A total of 1,304 people signed the petition calling for the institutionalization of a bill to protect the LGBTQI community in Namibia.

The petition was started by Ndiilokelwa Ntengwe.

According to the online petition, the LGBTQI community demands:

1. Parliament will discuss and pass a revised version of the hate speech bill.

2. Ask the Ombudsman’s Office and the Media Ombudsman to address WhatsApp groups targeting the LGBTQI community and take action.

3. Parliament acknowledges that discrimination against homosexuals exists in the country.

4. Include digital safety in hate speech bills.

5. The Ministry of Gender, Justice, Safety and Security held a meeting to develop a rapid response plan to protect the LGBTQI community.

6. A parliamentary standing committee must be set up to deal with the above WhatsApp group issue.

According to the online petition, the #ShutItAllDownNamibia movement will launch a nationwide protest if these demands are not met.
