The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) said 10 Indian fishermen were facing prosecution on multiple charges, including the death of a navy personnel while on duty.
On June 25, a SLN personnel from the Navy’s Special Boat Squadron was seriously injured during a special operation near Kanksanthurai due to aggressive maneuvers by Indian trawlers. He succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
An autopsy determined that the sailor’s death was an accident due to a spinal cord injury.
The Sri Lanka National Army said the seized Indian trawler along with 10 Indian fishermen were taken to Kanksanthurai port and handed over to Kanksanthurai police for further legal action.
Kanksanthurai police have filed a ‘B’ grade report with the Malakkam court in Jaffna seeking prosecution of the ten Indian fishermen. The SLNA added that they face charges including illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters, causing the death of a naval personnel during the operation and causing damage to naval property.
The late sailor’s funeral was held yesterday (June 26) at Ibagamwa with the Navy conducting a solemn funeral. The Navy Commander also posthumously awarded the late senior sailor the rank of Fleet Chief Petty Officer.
The Navy also said that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that his family receives appropriate compensation and allowances.
