In a bid to strengthen Zimbabwe-Zambia relations, Zimbabwean Defence Minister Oppa Muchinguri-Kahiri led a high-level delegation to attend the 26th Ministerial Committee (MCO) of the Southern African Development Community (SADC)-Zambia Agency for Political, Defence and Security Cooperation.
The delegation, including Zambian Minister of Internal Affairs and Cultural Heritage Kazembe Kazembe and other senior government officials, was warmly welcomed by the Zambian government.
The visit comes after Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa made comments to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the establishment of a US military base in Zambia. Mnangagwa’s comments sparked discussions about the geopolitical dynamics of the region and the strategic interests of global powers in southern Africa.
During the SADC meeting, Zimbabwe and Zambia delegations exchanged views on further strengthening and deepening bilateral relations. Key discussions included preparations for the upcoming Joint Permanent Committee for Defence and Security Cooperation (JPCCDS) to build on the success of previous sessions such as the 18th Joint Permanent Cooperation Committee (JPCC) and the Joint Trade and Customs Committee (JTCC) held earlier this year.
Her Excellency Opa Muchinguri-Kahiri highlighted the excellent bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and Zambia and stressed the importance of defence and security cooperation. “The discussions went well and we are committed to further strengthening our cooperation to ensure security and stability in the region,” she said.
The visit coincided with the visit of the Southern African Development Community Election Observation Mission, led by Zambian Nevers Mumba, which has been closely monitoring the Zimbabwe electoral process to ensure transparency and fairness of the elections.
The participation of the Zimbabwean government in the SADC Ministerial Committee of that body reflects its ongoing commitment to regional stability and cooperation. The exchange of ideas and strategies with Zambian counterparts is expected to strengthen bilateral relations and contribute to the overall security and political cohesion of the Southern African region.
As President Mnangagwa prepares to assume the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community, strong ties between Zimbabwe and Zambia are essential to meeting future challenges and opportunities. Recent engagement is a testament to the enduring partnership between the two countries to promote peace, security and prosperity in the region.
