HARARE – Zimbabwe’s Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry has announced that the ministry is awaiting funds to upgrade the country’s sports stadiums, which currently do not meet FIFA standards. As a result, the national football team has to play its matches abroad.

Minister Coventry acknowledged the severity of the problem of inadequate stadium infrastructure and stressed the urgent need for government investment to improve the country’s sporting facilities.

The poor condition of local sports venues not only hinders the national team from playing on home soil, but also deprives Zimbabwean fans of the opportunity to cheer for the team in person.

“This situation is extremely urgent and highlights the need for the government to prioritise funding for stadium upgrades,” Coventry said. “Ensuring our teams can play at home is vital to their performance and the morale of our supporters.”

The ministry’s funding appeal highlights the wider implications of the current state of sporting infrastructure, emphasising the importance of government taking swift action to address the issue and restore home advantage to the Zimbabwe national team.
