Zimbabwe does not need opposition politics – says Chamisa – Zimbabwe Post

HARARE – Embattled former Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has called for a change in Zimbabwe’s political landscape, advocating what he calls “alternative politics” rather than traditional opposition tactics.

Chamisa, who has faced increasing scrutiny since leaving the CCC earlier this year, expressed his views on social media, saying: “Zimbabwe and politics need a new politics, not opposition but alternative politics.” His comments came at a time when the country’s political environment is under great pressure, especially after the recent Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit in Harare.

The young politician has been criticised for doing nothing as the government intensifies its crackdown on political opponents. Criticism intensified after nearly 80 members of his former party, including Senator Jameson Timba, were arrested at a private barbecue in Harare and held in detention.

Chamisa left the Zimbabwe Christian Church earlier this year, citing infiltration by the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front, and has since left supporters in doubt about his future political plans, a strategy he has described as “strategic ambiguity”. His strategy has drawn mixed reactions, with some supporters frustrated by his reliance on biblical verses rather than decisive action, such as leading peaceful street protests.

The lawyer-turned-politician quit the CCC amid unrest within the party, which was sparked by the actions of self-appointed secretary-general Sengezo Tshabangu, who controversially recalled elected party officials. Critics questioned why Chamisa left the CCC without building a clear political alternative.

Amid the criticism, Chamisa also responded to allegations of financial mismanagement during his tenure as CCC chairman. “I have an open heart. I have nothing to hide. I live narrowly and with integrity. I seek peace, not war. I speak of love, not hate! The future is a happy one,” he insisted.

As Zimbabwe’s political future remains uncertain, Chamisa’s call for a new political approach could signal the beginning of a broader shift in the country’s opposition landscape.
