A fire broke out at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine on Sunday. Images showed thick smoke billowing from the facility.
Ukrainian President Zelensky posted on X that he accused Russia of arson.
“We have registered that Russian occupiers set fire at the nuclear power plant. Currently, radiation levels are normal. But as long as Russian terrorists take control of the nuclear power plant, the situation will be urgent.” Posts.
“Since the first day of its occupation, Russia has used the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant to blackmail Ukraine, all of Europe and the world,” Zelensky continued.
He called on the outside world to put pressure on Russia.
“Russia must be held accountable. Only Ukrainian control of the nuclear power plant can guarantee complete safety.”
Russia accuses Ukraine
Russia itself accused Ukraine of starting the fire through Ukrainian artillery fire, according to state news agency TASS.
The fire broke out at a cooling systems factory and emergency services were at the scene working to extinguish it, according to Russia’s appointed governor, Evgeny Balitsky.
Balitsky said the fire had no impact on the safety of the nuclear power plant.
There has been a steady flow of military activity around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which it has occupied since 2022.
