(FMT) – The former attorney general said they should call for adequate funding for Chinese schools instead of “moralising” the issue.
Former Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim today criticised Umno and PAS leaders’ reaction to breweries raising funds for Chinese schools, saying they are “always angry about things that do not affect them”.
He said that while Chinese community leaders were aware of the dangers of addiction to any substance, accepting proceeds from brewery fundraising was necessary because such schools received little government funding.
“Umno and PAS should respond positively and urge the government to provide adequate funding for Chinese schools. This is better than lecturing (on the issue),” he said in an article on X.
Fundraising efforts for Chinese schools have become an issue after PAS criticised a deputy minister for accepting a mock cheque of RM3 million emblazoned with the Tiger Beer logo during a recent fundraising event at Chinese Primary School Tzu Ming in Sungai Pelek, Selangor.
The Education Ministry stood by its guidelines on donations to schools, which it said had been in place under previous governments.
Meanwhile, the cabinet agreed to give schools of all streams the freedom to accept donations through boards or foundations. However, activities involving alcohol brands must not involve Muslim students.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh defended Education Minister Fadlina Sidek following criticism from DAP MP Lim Guan Eng, saying the government policy to ban such donations was to protect racial and religious sensitivities.
But Zaid said Malays also suffer from other serious addictions that these leaders should focus on, citing the drug problem as an example.
“How many husbands betray their first wives and marry in Thailand? These leaders should put a stop to this. They are not touching on this issue,” he added.
He also cited reports of sexual assaults of boys in schools, some of which involved teachers.
“How many sexual assault cases has the government prosecuted? How many teachers have been fired? Please tell us,” he said.
Likewise, he expressed concern over the multiple types of religious schools that exist in the country and asked, “Who will monitor them?”
He said the Malay community faced many serious problems, “but their leaders are only angry about beer, gambling and the Chinese”.
“They (Malay leaders) don’t care about their own people. That is why the Malays have no future.”
