Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today slammed Kluang Amanah Parti Amanah for its bid to contest the Johor Mahkota state seat which fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman last week.
(FMT) – The Barisan Nasional chairman said parties in the unity government should not fight for seats that do not belong to them and called on the federal government to be more respectful of its allies.
“If the seat belongs to another party, please show respect. (The seat) should be given to the relevant party (to run in the election). (They should not) ask for this or that,” Zahid told a press conference.
The deputy prime minister added that out of respect for the family of the late Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, senior leaders of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) have not discussed a by-election for the seat.
“She just died. We need to sympathize with her family. Let’s not rush to come up with all kinds of political solutions.”
Kluang Amanah Party’s lobbying for the Crown seat held by Umno’s Sharifah has drawn criticism from several Umno leaders.
Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong later said the party would uphold the “incumbency principle” and support Umno in defending its seat in future by-elections.
Amanah Youth executive committee member Fadli Omar Aminudda later said he was determined to field the party’s candidate as the Johor state government was not a unity government.
However, senior Amanah leaders later said that the views of Kluang Amanah and Fadli were not the party’s official position.
