The 2023 cohort of the DW Akademie Media Incubation Program is once again faced with a difficult journey of development phases and goals to achieve. This approach allows measuring the commitment, robustness and talent of the teams involved.

This year, five teams completed the incubation process and are now part of the growing MEDIA LOVES TECH family. Although only one team was able to win the Grand Prix award at the ceremony in Tunis on December 8, all other projects were able to further develop their ideas. Each of them has strong future potential.

Yaluna wins the 2023 Grand Prix

The online magazine Yaluna won the grand prize of the program, positioning itself as a media that “helps young people get information and inspiration” through solution journalism. Yaluna is very active on social networks, discussing a wide range of topics such as the environment or health, mainly Tunisian issues, from a constructive and inspiring point of view.

Paul Schütte, Project Manager Media Loves Tech at DW Akademie, congratulated the entire Yaluna team: “The global trend is towards distrust and disinterest in media and information, Yaluna focuses on taking a positive approach to information, showing what works, what motivates people and what inspires them. Tunisia, like everywhere else, can only benefit from projects like this. In addition, there is an educational dimension that we attach great importance to: spreading knowledge and helping to understand the key to information is essential to forming an informed opinion. »

The grand prize the team received will enable Yaluna to further build itself and improve its editorial quality and economic model.

Media incubation at the heart of new initiative

Since 2023, MEDIA LOVES TECH has been part of the SMART MEDIA ACCELERATOR, a new initiative of the DW Akademie that aims to identify, support and strengthen media, media start-ups and media at the prototype stage to achieve high-quality journalism in Tunisia.

In addition to the incubation program, the Smart Media Accelerator also supports established media organizations through another program MEDIA PARCOURS as well as online resources for self-directed learning and networking opportunities. The DW Academia is therefore more committed than ever to supporting new media generations and supporting high-quality journalism in the region.

The Smart Media Accelerator is part of “We’re talking about it!” Tunisia 360°, a project funded by the European Union and co-financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The MEDIA LOVES TECH project is run by DW Akademie (Deutsche Welle International Centre for Media Development, Journalism Training and Knowledge Transfer). It was developed in partnership with Al Khat, a Tunisian NGO dedicated to freedom of the press and expression, and aims to become a laboratory of ideas for the future of journalism in the internet age.
