AKIPRESS website – The third edition of the world’s longest rally, the İpek Yolu Rally, has kicked off at Istanbul’s Sultanahmet Square with 30 competitors from seven countries, and will end on August 28 in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. Report.
The rally was organized by the East-West Friendship and Peace Rally Association and supported by the European Union and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The opening ceremony was attended by the association’s president Nadir Selin, consulates general of EU member states, representatives of non-governmental organizations and dozens of car enthusiasts.
“We have competitors from seven different countries: Germany, Italy, Austria, Moldova, France, the United Kingdom and Turkey. Central Asia is new to us and the terrain there is amazing. This is our third time here. We are here because of Eastern and Western civilizations. We sincerely hope to contribute to these two once opposing civilizations and become a link between them,” said Selin in his opening speech.
After starting from Turkey, the contestants will pass through Iran, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and China before arriving at the last stop, Mongolia.
Semiye Selin, a contestant from Germany, said she was excited after participating in the competition.
“I had never thought about visiting Samarkand or Bukhara before, and I wasn’t even sure if I could hope to go there. That’s why I’m excited,” said Serling.
Another competitor from Antalya province, Gulay Karakimcelil, noted: “I have always been interested in this route. I wanted this to be my first activity after retirement, and my wish has come true.”
