The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed on Wednesday that Mexico had its first known case of human infection with H5N2 avian influenza, a different case from the one found in the United States.
“This is the first laboratory-confirmed case of human infection with influenza A(H5N2) virus in the world.”this is the first report of human infection with the H5 avian virus in Mexico,” the UN health agency said in a statement on its website.
Mexican authorities informed the World Health Organization on May 23 of a confirmed case of H5N2 avian influenza in a 59-year-old patient who had been hospitalized in the capital.
The patient had “multiple underlying conditions” and developed a fever on April 17.He suffered breathing problems, diarrhea and nausea before his death on April 24, the World Health Organization said.
The Mexican government said in a separate statement that he was “a 59-year-old male with a history of chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes and long-standing systemic arterial hypertension, residing in the State of Mexico.”
The UN agency said the source of infection was “currently unknown” and stressed that the victims had “no history of contact with birds or other animals”.
“No risk of infection”
The organization pointed out thatIn March, an epidemiological focus of H5N2 avian influenza was discovered at a poultry farm in Michoacán.It borders the State of Mexico.
Other poultry cases were detected in the cities of Texcoco, Mexico State, in March and Temascarapa in April.
The World Health Organization said it “cannot so far be determined” whether the human infections detected were linked to the poultry cases.
Based on the available information,The organization estimates that the risk posed by the virus to the population is currently “negligible.”
Likewise, the Mexican government’s Ministry of Health confirmed that “there is no risk of contagion among the population” and assured that “all samples of confirmed contacts (patients) were negative.”
He also noted that authorities were taking control of farms near the victim’s home and setting up a permanent surveillance system to detect other cases in wildlife in the area.
There was also an outbreak of avian influenza in the United States, but it was of the H5N1 type.It had been spreading among the herd for several weeks.
Several cases have been detected in humans, but there is still no human-to-human transmission.
