The towpath beside the Herentals-Bocholt canal is particularly popular with cyclists. At around 8:10 p.m., a passerby heard strange noises in the bushes near the border of Herentals and Aalen. He spotted two people on the ground. One man immediately ran away.
“The other person remained on the side of the road,” said Wim Van Reusel, a spokesman for the local Neterland police. “It was a woman covered in blood. Witnesses immediately called the emergency services. We took this matter very seriously and immediately deployed a large number of resources.”
Sniffer dogs and a federal police helicopter equipped with a thermal imaging camera were deployed. Based on witness accounts, personal descriptions were released through the Neighborhood Information Network.
At around 10 p.m., police arrested a suspect at his home in the Herentals area. He is currently serving a prison sentence. “Further investigations must establish whether he is indeed the perpetrator.”
The victim was allegedly rollerblading on the towpath when she was dragged aside by the assailant. “The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries. She had severe bruising on her face. We spoke to her for a while but she was very impressed,” Van Reusel said.
