Saturday 31st August was a very sad day in Wallis, with strong winds. It was a sad day when a 46-year-old woman drowned. The taxi boat that was carrying her and twelve other people back from the island capsized due to heavy seas.
The last weekend of August was marked by tragedy in Wallis. On Saturday, August 31, a 46-year-old woman drowned, the prosecutor confirmed following a medical examination.
On Saturday morning, a taxi boat set out from the village of Gashi for an outing to the island. More than 20 people were on the taxi boat to Faoa Island, south of Wallis. That afternoon, the boat capsized on the first return trip with 13 people on board, including the victim. She was found unconscious, but the emergency services were unable to save her.
Another 13 family members are waiting on the island for a second trip. They must spend the night there before being picked up by two boats on Sunday morning.
The tragedy raises many questions about maritime safety that the investigation must answer. Prosecutors are also investigating for manslaughter as a result of a strong wind warning issued this weekend, which strongly discourages sea travel.
