A climber has died after slipping on Mount Ruapehu.

The woman was among a group of people at the climbing site near Whangaehu Hut on the eastern side of the mountain on Saturday.

Police said the woman slipped down the slope around 11 a.m.

Police said she “fell from a considerable distance and sustained serious injuries”.

“Emergency services, the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter, members of Ruapehu Alpine Rescue and Tukino Ski Area staff responded immediately.

“Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the woman died at the scene.”

Police said their thoughts were with the woman’s family and fellow climbers.

Until 6am on Tuesday, the eastern slopes of the mountain, above 2,000 metres, were in rāhui conditions.

Officer Sean McNally called it a “tragic incident.”

“While this matter is still under investigation, we cannot stress enough the importance of understanding the alpine environment and being mentally and physically prepared to cope with this rigour.”
