Based on testimonies from Israeli soldiers and commanders, the investigation revealed that Palestinian civilians often wore Israeli army uniforms.
According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the Israeli army systematically used Palestinian civilians as human shields during its genocidal war in the Gaza Strip Disclosure Tuesday.
The investigation revealed that the Israeli army used Palestinian civilians as human shields during operations in the Gaza Strip. “Israeli soldiers have been using human shields in this way throughout Gaza in recent months,” the newspaper noted.
The investigation also showed that senior Israeli military officials, including Army Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, were aware of the illegal practice.
“Sources said that IDF Chief of Staff Herzl Halevi was one of the senior officers who knew about the use of Gazans as human shields,” the report said.

The investigation revealed that the Palestinian civilians were generally in their 20s and dressed in Israeli army uniforms, based on testimonies from Israeli soldiers and commanders.
“But if you look closely, you’ll notice most of them are wearing sneakers, not combat boots,” the article noted, adding, “Their hands are cuffed behind their backs, and their faces are filled with fear.”
Israeli soldiers reportedly called them ‘Shawish’“an obscure Arabic word of Turkish origin meaning a sergeant.”
“Our lives are more important”
Israeli soldiers were reportedly told “our lives are more important than theirs” as a justification for using Palestinians as human shields to minimize Israeli casualties.
The report describes how civilians are forced to perform dangerous tasks, such as entering tunnels or buildings ahead of soldiers, wearing military uniforms and wearing cameras on their bodies.

“At one point, an Israeli soldier involved in a raid on a building said one of the units included a Gazan wearing a white coverall,” the report said.
“In an effort to force the armed Palestinian inside the building to come out, Gazans were sent there to act as mediators. But the attempt failed and the armed men shot and killed the man,” it added.
“It’s a matter of pride,” said one Israeli soldier.
Al Jazeera footage
According to Haaretz, “The military is feigning innocence despite Al Jazeera airing the footage two months ago.”
The video reportedly showed “Israeli soldiers dressing Palestinian detainees in uniforms and body armor, attaching cameras to them and tying their hands with plastic bands as they marched them into badly damaged homes and tunnel entrances.”
One combat soldier who reportedly used Gazans as human shields said: “When I saw the Al Jazeera report, I said: ‘Ah, yes, it’s true'”, adding: “Then I saw the IDF response and it was totally untrue. At least the brigade commander knew about it.”
Minors and the elderly
Haaretz also reported that Israeli soldiers often use minors or elderly people as human shields.
“Sometimes really old people are forced into the houses,” one soldier told an Israeli newspaper.
The use of civilians and other protected persons as human shields is strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law.

According to the recent Report “The use of civilians or other protected persons as shields in military operations is a clear violation of international humanitarian law and is also considered a war crime. This definition is clearly set out in Article 8(2)(b)(xxiii) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and applies to war crimes committed during international armed conflicts,” MSF said.
