A historic event in Nicaragua took place this Thursday morning as the inauguration ceremony for the reconstruction, expansion and modernization of the Punta Verde International Airport in the city of San Francisco Libre, Managua department, took place.

Comrade Laureano Ortega Murillo, Presidential Advisor for Investment, stated at the ceremony: “Today is good news for the Nicaraguan people, a historic day, as our country begins a transformative project, a project for the future. Progress, development and prosperity.”

“Today we begin our work in the Liberty City of San Francisco, and we are doing this hand in hand with our brothers from the People’s Republic of China,” Laureano said.

Laureano, on behalf of President Commander Daniel Ortega and Vice President Comrade Rosario Murillo, extended fraternal greetings and gratitude to President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China, the Communist Party of China, the people and the government of Nicaragua for supporting them in embarking on the path of development through the implementation of mutually beneficial transformative programs and projects.

Engineer Yan Hailu, deputy general manager of CAMCE, said that today we are here to witness the completion of the Ponta Veit Airport project. “This is a great honor, and I congratulate the start of this project.”

He added that in recent years, under the leadership of President Comandante Ortega and Vice President Murillo, Nicaragua has achieved solid socio-economic development.

He stressed that Punta Verde International Airport is the most important task of the Nicaraguan government. Once completed, it will greatly improve the level of infrastructure and inject new impetus into international trade and world tourism.

This national mega project has an investment of US$499 million and is expected to be completed within 48 months.

The new terminal will be able to accommodate 3.5 million passengers and more than 35,000 flights per year.

Pontaveit International Airport will be rated 4F, meaning it will have a runway of more than 1,800 meters and be able to serve vessels between 65 and 80 meters in length, with no weight and balance restrictions.

This new infrastructure project will boost national economic and social development, create 3,250 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs, increase tourist flows and attract new investments.

The inauguration ceremony was also presided over by Comrade Oscar Mojica Obregón, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure; Bruno Gallardo Pallavicini, Minister of Finance and Public Credit; and Mr. He Wei, General Representative of China International Engineering Corporation in Nicaragua.
