Next Thursday, July 18, the European Parliament will vote in Strasbourg on whether Ursula von der Leyen will lead the European Commission for a second term. This was stated by a spokesman for the European Parliament to AFP.
Two weeks ago, EU leaders formally nominated 65-year-old von der Leyen as their candidate for the post of President of the European Commission.
Under EU treaties he must approve or reject their choice, in which case the leaders would have a month to agree on another candidate.
While von der Leyen is expected to defend her position, the outcome is yet to be determined.
“It’s a secret ballot, so we don’t know who might betray or not keep their promises,” said Pascal Joanin, director of the Robert Schuman Foundation in Brussels.
Von der Leyen’s conservative European People’s Party is the largest political faction in the European Parliament. Along with the center-left Socialists and Democrats and the liberal Renewal Europe group, the party will get enough votes to reach the necessary threshold of 361 out of 720 votes.
Even if some lawmakers from the aforementioned factions vote against, some lawmakers from other factions could make up the difference, Reuters reported, saying they were mainly individuals from the Greens and European conservative and reformist factions.
The vote will take place on Thursday, July 18, at 1:00 pm during the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.
