Analysts from the Eurasian Development Bank assess the prospects of the project
Analysts of the Eurasian Development Bank assessed the prospects of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway construction project, which will connect the railway networks of the three countries.
The railway line is “Kashgar – Turgat – Arpa Valley – Makmel – Jalal-Abad – Karasu – Andijan”, with a total length of 523 kilometers.
The cargo transport potential is estimated at 7 million to 13 million tons per year. Construction is likely to take six to eight years.
If implemented, the new railway will form part of the Trans-Eurasian route, connecting China, Central Asia, the Middle East, Turkey and Europe via Turkmenistan’s North-South ITC and TRACECA connections.
The bank’s analysts said the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway is not a competitor to Russia’s Trans-Siberian Railway and the China-Kazakhstan railway corridor because it focuses on other target markets, serves a large number of transit countries and the need for multiple transshipments of goods.
At the same time, the new railway will shift part of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan’s foreign trade and transit cargo flows from road transport to rail transport.
Benefits of the project for Kyrgyzstan: resolution of transport logjams, increase in transit revenues, rail freight between northern and southern regions of the country.
Uzbekistan’s advantage: Shorter container shipping routes to and from China.
