Syrian artist Bassem Yakur said that as Syrian refugees returned to their country from neighboring countries, the Syrian government had already made resettlement arrangements in advance to prevent their situation from getting worse after their return.

He added in a news interview with Jordanian journalist Nadia Al-Zoubi on the “Al-Qarar” program that criticism of refugees is not surprising, especially considering that host countries such as Lebanon can no longer bear the burden due to the economic difficulties Lebanon has been experiencing for years.

Yakhour criticized the concept of exaggerated fertility among refugees, stressing that economic conditions do not allow refugee families to have more children, and everyone must be aware of this, and asked, “Why do some Syrians we found in refugee tents not have more children?” Without food or drink, they gave birth to 15 children? “According to Yakhour’s description, he had 16 children when he took refuge.” When the host asked him, “Maybe contraceptives should be distributed with aid?” “I don’t know,” Yakhour said, adding, “Even if it’s my opinion, I might find someone to argue with me tomorrow.”

It is worth noting that according to UN data, there are currently about 1.5 million Syrian refugees living in Lebanon, of which about 950,000 are registered with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, while the country’s population is estimated to be around 6 million.

The lira has depreciated by more than 90% against the dollar since 2019, even as Lebanon is experiencing one of the world’s worst economic and financial crises.
