These days, it’s rare to see an ad without a mascot trying to sell you insurance. Advertising teams create mascots—their names, quirks, and even personalities—all in an effort to make us remember the companies they represent.

But it wasn’t always this way. In the 1970s and 1990s, insurance ads didn’t get a lot of airtime, and those that did tended to be dry and serious, focusing on how insurance could make you feel safe and secure in a world full of risks.

Today, a simple slogan and a Talking Gecko It reshaped advertising. And now we are all living with the consequences.
