The Economics Job Market Rumors website is half a job information wiki where people can post what’s going on inside the economics department, and half a discussion forum where anyone with an internet connection can ask the economics community anything they want to know. All anonymously.
People can talk about finding a job, share rumors, or just vent. And the anger can get very intense. The forum has become notorious Targeting racist and sexist postsoften targeting specific women and people from marginalized backgrounds.
Last year, economist Florian Ederer and engineer Kyle Jensen discovered a flaw in the way the site provides anonymity to users. The flaw made it possible to identify which universities and institutions were the source of many of the toxic posts on the site. And it helped answer a long-standing question that has dogged the economics community: Are toxic posts on EJMR the work of a fringe group of trolls, or are they a symptom of deeper problems in economics itself?
