Authorities have identified the gunman who opened fire at a rally for former US President Donald Trump on Saturday as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. He was shot dead at the scene by Secret Service agents.
The FBI revealed Crooks’ name in a statement early Sunday morning and identified him as a resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, about 35 miles south of Butler, where the rally took place.
Crooks will graduate from Bethel Park High School in 2022, according to local media reports and a video of the graduation ceremony.
Public records show Crooks is registered as a Republican in Pennsylvania at an address in Bethel Park, which law enforcement officials searched Saturday night. This year’s presidential election will be the first in which he will be eligible to vote.
Federal Election Commission records show that a man named Thomas Crooks donated $15 to a Democratic political action committee called the Progressive Turnout Project at the same address.
When reached by CNN late Saturday night, Crooks’ father, Matthew Crooks, expressed confusion and said he would wait to speak with law enforcement before commenting further on his son’s condition.
