French basketball player Victor Wimpanyama has become the tallest athlete to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics, standing at 6 feet 7 inches, or 2.23 meters, according to The Telegraph.
Wimbanyama is considered as one of the tallest basketball players in the world as he plays for the San Antonio Spurs who are active in the National Basketball League (NBA).
The 21-year-old was selected first in the 2023 NBA Draft and is considered one of the best prospects in basketball.
Such extreme heights are rare, but it’s not the first time in the NBA, the newspaper noted, “What makes Wimbanyama unique is his agility and ease in handling the ball, and he also has, for a tall guy, great hands.”
American basketball legend LeBron James, nicknamed “King James,” described Umpayama as an “alien creature” after his impressive performance in a 2022 exhibition game in Las Vegas, saying: “No one has ever seen anyone as tall but sleek and elegant on the surface like him.”
Wimbanyama carries the French hopes for men’s basketball during the Olympics, which is usually a second-place finish behind the United States. But winning any kind of medal would be impressive, The Telegraph reported.
France had lost four straight friendlies before the Olympics and, aside from Wen Banyama, lacked elite players, with the exception of American midfielder Rudy Gebret of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
According to the NBA website, Wimbanyama started his professional career in 2019, first playing for the French club Nanter 92. Two years later, he moved to ASVEL Lyon Villeurbanne, where he won the French League Championship.
Wimbanyama spent the 2022-2023 season with French club Métropole 92 before moving to the San Antonio Spurs in the United States.
Wenbanyama also won two silver medals at the junior level with the French national team and set the FIBA world record for blocks per game at the 2021 U-19 World Cup.
