Israel defended itself against Hezbollah rocket and drone attacks over the weekend, but that did not derail the talks.
The White House announced on Monday progress in the Gaza ceasefire talks in Cairo. They should continue for a few days at the working group level, despite the armed clashes between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, AFP TASR reported.
“Negotiations continue to make progress and our team on the ground continues to find the talks constructive,” said John Kirby, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council. According to him, Hezbollah’s rocket and drone attacks over the weekend did not affect the negotiations, while Israel acted in self-defense.
Kirby added that White House official Brett McGurk had stayed in Cairo an extra day to keep lower-level talks going. “He’s probably going to leave pretty soon and leave the negotiations and the work to the working group members,” he said.
“We expect these working group-level negotiations to take at least a few days,” Kirby said, adding that the length of time would depend on who is in the chamber.
Despite differences between Israel and Hamas, the United States has repeatedly expressed optimism about negotiations aimed at achieving a ceasefire in the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
