Lala agreed. “You can look at a run-down shack… and think ‘I can make this work,’ ” she said.
“There are still flood zones at the bottom (of the West End), and quite a few architects have been able to build homes there.”
The West End has long been a magnet for creative people. The riverside suburb is also home to the most graphic designers (50), musicians (19) and web designers (14).
It has the highest number of professional dancers and choreographers (20), many of whom live near Queensland Ballet’s Thomas Dixon Centre on Montagu Road. It also has the highest number of marketing experts (133) and economists (14).
Elsewhere in Brisbane, Albany Creek has the most police officers (91); Camp Hill has the most public relations professionals (39) and footballers (11); New Farm has the most lawyers; and Sunnybank Hills has the most dentists (46).
Indooroopilly is probably the engineering hub of the city as it is home to most of the mechanical, electrical and industrial engineers.

Inner Brisbane
Brisbane’s CBD’s towering apartment buildings are home to the highest number of software engineers in Queensland (118).
The CBD also has the highest number of information and communications security experts (24) and software testers (21), in addition to nine physicists.
A short trip from Brisbane’s court district, less than five kilometres away, is the riverside suburb of New Farm, which has the largest number of lawyers (230), barristers (39) and magistrates (7).
Brisbane Suburbs
House prices are a good indicator of the job gap between inner and outer Brisbane.
Brisbane’s inner city is the preferred choice for professionals (medical professionals, business and legal professionals), while the outer suburbs are home to people working in trades and essential services.
In the city’s west, Ashgrove has the most anaesthetists (21) while The Gap has the most psychiatrists (14).
Capalaba had the most air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics (48) and postmen (24), while Lake Forest had the most bus drivers (78) and religious ministers (32) and Inala had the most beauticians (255).
Caboolture has the highest number of aged care and disability carers (456) and truck drivers (287).
sunshine Beach
Now, let’s head along the Bruce Highway to the lush Sunshine Coast hinterland town of Buderim, just 10 minutes’ drive from Maroochydore Beach and home to the Ginger Factory.
Buderim was the suburb with the most jobs at 69.
It has the largest concentration of carpenters, electricians, GPs, physiotherapists, paramedics, dietitians, pilots and police detectives in the state.
Buderim could also be the education capital of Queensland – with no fewer than 300 secondary school teachers, 240 primary school teachers, 48 special education teachers and 47 principals.
Justin Stewart, an art teacher at Siena Catholic Academy, is one of them.
“I have to drive past three schools to get to school in the morning, but my commute only takes 10 minutes,” she said.
“The Sunshine Coast’s cultural and sporting opportunities are also first class, so it’s a natural choice if you want to easily get involved in school and community life without having to travel too far.”
Gold Coast
Finally, let’s head along the M1 motorway to the beach in the state’s second largest city.
The Gold Coast may not be considered the centre of Queensland’s coffee culture, but it is home to the most baristas. Southport has almost 120 baristas and 161 restaurant managers.
Surfers Paradise had the most chefs, commercial cleaners and hotel managers. It also had the most hairdressers (108), the most dental assistants (67) and the most masseurs (67).
Upper Coomera had the highest number of childcare workers (236), boat builders and repairers (51) and landscapers (50).
The Isle of Hope has the most chief executives, with 183 – although in the census any head of a small business can call themselves a CEO.
