The FBI has named Trump shot during campaign rally Played Thomas Matthew Crooks.

Crockers allegedly opened fire as the former US president was addressing a crowd in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing one spectator and seriously injuring two others.

The 20-year-old kitchen worker was killed instantly by a Secret Service sniper, officials said.

He is from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from the site of the assassination attempt, and graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022 with a $500 math and science scholarship, according to local newspaper reports.

The BBC understands Crooks worked in the kitchen of a local nursing home not far from his home.

According to US media reports, state voter records show that he is a registered Republican.

He also reportedly donated $15 to the liberal campaign group ActBlue in 2021.

According to US media reports, Crooks was wearing a T-shirt from Demolition Ranch, a YouTube channel famous for its gun and explosion content with millions of subscribers, posting videos about various guns and explosive devices.

Law enforcement officials believe the weapon used to shoot Donald Trump was purchased by Crook’s father, according to the Associated Press.

Two police officers who spoke on condition of anonymity told The Associated Press that Crooks’ father purchased a weapon at least six months ago.

After Crooks was identified, police and agencies are investigating his motives.

“We have not determined the suspect’s motive at this time,” Kevin Rojek, a special agent with the FBI in Pittsburgh, said at a briefing Saturday evening.

Bethel Park police said they are investigating whether there were bombs hidden around Crooks’ home.

Access to the area remains strictly controlled, with police cars blocking the roads. Only local residents are allowed in and out.

The shooting left one person dead and two injured.

According to CBS, the three victims were all adult males and were spectators at the event. Their names have not yet been released.

A GoFundMe page organized by Meredith O’Rourke, the Trump campaign’s national finance director, was set up within hours of the attack to channel donations to the families of those injured.

To date, the campaign has raised more than $340,000 (£267,000).

In a post on his TRUTH Social platform, Trump said he was “hit by a bullet that went through the upper part of my right ear” and that he felt the bullet “go through the skin.”

When security guards led Trump away, blood was visible on his ears and face.

A statement released on the Republican National Committee (RNC) website said Trump was “in good condition” and thanked law enforcement officers.

A witness told the BBC that he saw a man – believed to be Crooks – standing on the roof of a building with a rifle before Trump was shot.

The attacker opened fire with “an AR-style rifle,” according to BBC US partner CBS News.

However, the FBI said it was unclear what type of gun the shooter used or how many shots were fired.

The Secret Service said a sniper returned fire and killed the gunman.
