What is the Fruity Diet?

Many carnivores have begun adding fruit to their animal-based diets, starting with carnivore diet Meat and Fruit Diet. In fact, this is one of the diets I’m asked about most often – is a meat and fruit diet a good idea? Does it make sense to add fruit to meat? Is there anything missing from a strict carnivore diet that adding some fruit could help with?

In fact, I think it’s a good idea for a lot of people. Here’s why adding meat and fruit to your diet may make sense for you:

Fruit “wants” to be eaten.

The most common reason people turn to carnivory is to avoid chemical anti-nutrients that plants intentionally produce to discourage animals and insects from eating and digesting them. Seeds and grains contain lectins and other allergenic proteins that impair digestion and cause stomach upset and mineral imbalances, so herbivores that eat them are unlikely to actually digest them or come back for more. They can’t run away, or fight back with claws and teeth, so they go the chemical warfare route.

Animals can run, hide, fight, bite and struggle. They don’t need chemical defense. Once you get over the claws, teeth, hide, and foot speed, they become very nutritious and easy to digest. Meat does not “want” to be eaten, but once the dominant central nervous system is eliminated and silenced, it remains neutral on the matter.

At the same time, the fruit wants to be eaten. If the animal eats the fruit for sugar and nutrients and then throws away or poops out the seeds, the fruit wins. The seeds have a chance to germinate and grow into another plant, keeping the genes flowing over time. There is no reason why the pulp of a fruit should contain high amounts of anti-nutritional compounds. Sure enough, the levels of these compounds in the fruit were quite low.

Fruit is easy to digest. If you have pre-existing fiber issues, some breeds with higher fiber content may cause problems. Some FODMAPThis substance found in certain fruits can also disrupt digestion in people who are sensitive to FODMAPs.

Fruits contain polyphenols

One of my biggest criticisms of pure carnivores has always been the lack of polyphenols——Plant compounds found in fruits, vegetables, and coffee, winechocolate, and just about every plant on Earth. Polyphenols are defense chemicals that plants use to ward off disease, fungal infections, and other microbes. When a plant is stressed, for example, it will often produce more polyphenols. Cutting a purple potato right off the vine will boost its anthocyanin content. This is a common trait designed to fight off pathogens that might invade.

But when animals like humans eat these polyphenols, good things happen. They are mild stressors that can cause hormesis– We adapt to stressors and become stronger, healthier, fitter, and stronger in the process. On a cellular level, polyphenols like blueberry anthocyanins appear stressful in the short term. It “damages” the cell, but then the cell recovers. On an organismal level, blueberries create a rebound effect and make us healthier. The organism and all the cells in it become more robust. A pure carnivore diet contains almost no of these compounds and is therefore deficient in them.

Some of these compounds, like quercetin (found in apples and onions), may even be effective against many of the autoimmune problems that lead people to turn to carnivores.1 Berries and pomegranates have also shown potential in fighting rheumatoid arthritis.2

Fruit Can Improve Digestive Health

Now, many people are starting to carnivore Because there is something wrong with their fiber. Either make them constipated, or give them diarrhea, or both. It can even worsen the condition in some people with digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). But fruit fiber may not be the same as grain fiber. Now, some people will react differently, but in general, fruit fiber is easier to digest than grain or plant fiber. If you have pre-existing fiber issues, some breeds with higher fiber content may cause problems. Some FODMAPs found in certain fruits can also disrupt digestion in people who are sensitive to FODMAPs.

Take constipation, for example. Constipation is usually resolved on a carnivore diet, but in a significant number of people it seems to get worse or even cause constipation. Some would say that you are not actually constipated, you just have “less waste.” Quite possibly. But what if you are actually constipated on a carnivore diet?

New Zealanders may be able to help. Eating two kiwis a day has been shown to reduce constipation.3 A review of kiwi fruit treatments for stomach problems found that kiwi fruit has the potential to improve gastrointestinal function through many different mechanisms.4

Studies of large groups of people have found that fruit fiber is even associated with lower levels of diverticulitis, while vegetable fiber is associated with higher levels.5 This suggests that fruit fiber may be gentler on the gut. There’s a lot of evidence that fruit helps with constipation more than it doesn’t.6

Indeed, none of these studies looked at people on a carnivore diet. They used ordinary people on a standard diet – the results may not apply. But if carnivores don’t seem to be helping your gut issues, or at least improving them, you might consider adding some fruit.

Eating fruit with meat may reduce carcinogen formation and inflammation

We’ve long known that consuming polyphenol-rich plants like cruciferous vegetables, leafy greens, and red wine with our meals Reduce inflammatory response After eating, it can even reduce post-meal lipid oxidation and the formation of carcinogenic compounds in the intestines. The same goes for fruits. One study found that adding fruit solids to meat sausages reduced oxidation of dietary lipids during consumption and storage.7 I don’t recommend mixing fruit into meat, but eating oranges with steak will have the same effect.

Speaking of oranges, a concentrated source of oranges—orange juice—can reduce the inflammatory effects of junk food. They can reduce lipid oxidation and make an otherwise unhealthy diet healthier.8 Imagine if you added an orange to a healthy steak dinner.

Fruit may provide nutrients lacking in carnivorous diet

If you don’t eat a lot of shellfish, the manganese content in your carnivore diet may be a little low. Eating blueberries or pineapple will make you feel fuller.

If you eliminate raw meat and all juices, your carnivore diet may be low in potassium. Eating almost any fruit can provide adequate potassium.

Fruits also provide vitamin C, which is often lacking in the diets of carnivores. Carnivores also have lower vitamin C requirements, but it doesn’t hurt to eat a little more just in case.

Fruit is rich in carbohydrates, which are useful if you engage in strenuous physical activity that depletes glycogen. Fruit is a great way to replenish glycogen stores.

Fruit provides variety to your meat-based diet

There is more fruit than you think. Tomato is a fruit. Pumpkin is a fruit. Avocado is a fruit. Anything with seeds that have edible pulp is a fruit, even though we usually think of it as a vegetable.

This means you can eat tomato and avocado salad. You can have mashed butternut squash or roasted kabocha squash. You can have pickles or fresh cucumbers. Zucchini can be grilled. You can eat all kinds of peppers.

Incorporating fruit into your carnivore diet can provide the opportunity for more variety than you might think. It’s more than just eating mangoes, pineapples, and berries. If you find the carnivore diet boring or difficult to maintain despite its health benefits, incorporating a little fruit might be just what you need to make it more sustainable.

A meat and fruit diet is by no means restrictive. You can really diversify your diet by adding fruit. If you’re concerned about sugar content, eat low-sugar fruits such as berries, avocados, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and pumpkins.
