After his marriage ended, Keith King was devastated. His wife had cheated on him, and his family was torn apart. That’s when he learned about a very old lawsuit called the Tort of Heartache. Through this lawsuit, he could sue the man his now ex-wife had an affair with during their marriage.

In this episode, we discuss where the Balm of the Soul tort came from, what relationships were like at the time, and why these lawsuits still exist today (in some states, anyway). Plus, what happened when Keith King used the Balm of the Soul tort to try to deal with the most important financial dispute of his life: his marriage.

This episode is hosted by Erika Beras and Sarah Gonzalez. It is produced by Emma Peaslee and edited by Molly Messick. Sierra Juarez is responsible for fact-checking and Gilly Moon is responsible for design. Alex Goldmark is the executive producer of Planet Money.
