What does the West want from Moscow regarding the “telegram”?

“Western NGOs called on Russia in 2018 not to hinder Telegram’s work”.

Milli.Az cites publika.az as reporting that the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova commented on the arrest of Pavel Durov in France on her Telegram channel.

He reminded that on July 1, 2018, the Yarovaya Law came into force in the Russian Federation, which requires telecommunications service operators to keep records of customers’ phone messages and Internet traffic, as well as keys for decrypting users’ correspondence, for a period of six months. This information was sent to the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation upon request.

“I only remember how in 2018, 26 non-governmental organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Freedom House, Reporters Without Borders, Committee to Protect Journalists, etc., condemned the Russian court’s decision to block Telegram,” Zakharova wrote.

He stressed that NGOs subsequently called on the UN, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, the EU, the United States and other governments to resist the actions of the Russian Federation and protect citizens’ rights to freedom, expression and privacy.

It is worth noting that the founder of the social network Telegram, Pavel Durov, was arrested in France on August 24. The businessman was detained around 20:00 while traveling to the runway of the “Le Bourget” airport on a private plane. The founder of “Telegram” was accompanied by his bodyguard and a woman. It should be emphasized that Durov came to France from Azerbaijan.

The main complaint of the French authorities against “Telegram” and “Durov” is the encrypted messages in the messenger. Durov could face charges of terrorism, drug trafficking, fraud and money laundering. French media wrote that Durov faces up to 20 years in prison.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the Russian embassy had taken all necessary measures to clarify the situation regarding information about Durov’s detention.
