June 30, 2024 (ZALINGAI) – Unidentified armed men have looted three aid trucks on their way to Central Darfur, the World Food Programme (WFP) revealed on Sunday.
On Thursday, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report said the number of hungry people in Sudan has increased to 25.6 million, of which 755,000 are at famine stage, which is feared to be in 14 regions of Kordofan, Darfur, Al Jazira and Sennar.
The World Food Programme said in a tweet on the “X” platform that “today, unidentified armed men attacked three World Food Programme trucks loaded with food aid and heading to Central Darfur.”
The World Food Programme stressed that the stolen food aid was intended to feed thousands of vulnerable people and urged local authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable.
The World Food Programme did not reveal the exact location of the incident due to the complex security situation in Central Darfur, which is divided into two parts, six of which are controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the remaining three by the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdul Wahid al-Nour.
The Netherlands Institute for International Relations (Clingendael) said on June 24 that based on estimates of harvests, stocks, wheat imports and humanitarian food aid, it is expected that 2.5 million people will die in Darfur and Kordofan by September 2024, accounting for 15% of the total population of the two regions.
The report stresses that parts of Sudan may have reached the critical point in May where widespread hunger could turn into widespread death.
