Defending 2022 Inter-Island Championship champions South East Vila Dolphins and North Rannoga Waves played out a 1-1 draw in their first group match of the 2024 Western Cup in Gizo, Western Province today.

The game starts at 1 p.m. at JFK Stadium.

In an effort to take an early lead, the Dolphins attempted to open the scoring with less than a minute to go, but it was saved by the Waves goalie.

In the 30th minute of the game, the Waves forward made a shot that left the Dolphins goalkeeper with no chance of saving the ball, scoring the team’s first goal.

However, the Dolphins responded quickly and in the final minutes captain Benjamine Kumio assisted Selwyn Willi to tie the score, and the second half ended at 1-1.

In the end, after many attempts from both sides, the game ended in a draw.

The Dolphins will play their second group stage match on Thursday against either North New Georgia or Central Ranonga.

North New Georgia, Central Rannoga, Southeastern Villa Dolphins and North Rannoga Waves were placed in Group A.

In an interview, Southeast Villa Dolphins head coach Sam LeLapitou said that the game was quite difficult for both teams, especially for the Dolphins because they prepared late.

Le Lapiteau said his team will work on improving their finishing and defensive weaknesses as he has full confidence in his players’ abilities.

He thanked his own team for their efforts and the other team for their outstanding performance.

This year’s Western Conference Championship has about 15 teams participating.
