The land is an asset of the West Sumatra government and will be handed over to residents affected by floods and flash floods in Tanah Datar.

BATUSANKHA, West Sumatra (ANTARA) – West Sumatra has prepared 3.8 hectares of land to resettle residents of Tanah Datar district whose homes were severely damaged by floods or are located in the red zone of Mount Marapi’s cold lava flows.

“The land is an asset of the West Sumatra government and will be handed over to residents affected by floods and flash floods in Tanah Datar,” West Sumatra Governor Majeddi said here on Tuesday.

He made the statement after inspecting the relocation site at Lampatan village in Lampatan town in Tanah Datar district.

According to him, the 3.8 hectares of land was previously used by the Main Plantation Seed Center (BBI) to grow secondary crops and is currently used by the West Sumatra Horticulture and Plantation Food Crops Office.

“BBI covers an area of about 20 hectares. Of this, we will use 3.8 hectares as a resettlement area for those disaster victims who have no land to build houses,” he said.

He said that according to the latest data, 58 affected families will be relocated to the area.

“We will also prepare supporting facilities for them such as places of worship and other amenities,” he added.

Mahayeldi said that after the resettlement land is allocated, the construction of houses and facilities will be the responsibility of the central government.

“In principle, the land has been prepared and we will immediately coordinate with the central government to build houses for the affected residents,” he said.

Since December 2023, floods and flash floods have repeatedly hit several areas in Danadatar.

The most serious one occurred on May 11, 2024, causing many deaths and damage to infrastructure, including residents’ homes.
