The Bethany Social Assistance Association will close its accommodation facilities in Trianon and in the center of Noumea this Thursday (August 1). The building, commonly known as Bethany House, lacks financial resources. Until now, it has welcomed women in precarious or even dangerous situations. While some have already left the home, others are still looking for a place to sleep with their children.
This is a huge blow to these women, for whom Bethany House is a real refuge. Those living in the accommodation in the city centre must vacate their accommodation by August 1, and those living in the accommodation in Trianon must find accommodation by Monday August 5.
While some have found solutions to relocate, for others the situation is more complicated. This is the case of Béatrice, who has lived in the house since 2023. The mother of two children, one of whom is nine years old, returned to the house due to family problems. “I don’t have a permanent place to live. I have family in Noumea but I don’t want to be a burden to them. We are going to stay on the streets, what are we going to do?” She explained.
For now, Beatrice leaves her nine-year-old child with her father. For another mother, Justine, two of her three sons live with her at Bethany’s residence in Trianon. She told us she has no immediate solution.
We are going to sleep outside with our children. We are afraid that outside, we will no longer be safe.
He gave full testimony at Margaret Poguen’s microphone.
The mothers, who are already in a precarious situation and whose situation is made worse by having nowhere to live, called on the Cris et Pleurs de femmes association to help them find a solution. “We have 17 women. But we asked if anyone could save a woman? I already have a grandmother who could save a woman and a child, but there are all these other people.” explains Yvette Danguigny, president of the association.
She believes there are solutions to help these women in danger. The social assistance association is now closed due to a lack of financial resources. According to the management, it operates with an income of 80 million CFA francs per year, 80% of which comes from the southern provinces. The latter paid only 60% of subsidies at the beginning of the year, the management said. The association was dissolved on July 22 and 11 employees had to be dismissed.
