Cameroon: Combating desertification – the inspiring Chinese model!

NINGXIA — Through scientific research and concerted efforts, China has successfully transformed some arid regions of Ningxia province into livable areas.

As Cameroon and other African countries grapple with the terrible desertification that is rapidly encroaching and endangering even inadequate arable land, it would not be foolish to learn about what other countries are doing, especially those that have been successful. It might even be rewarding to compare with a country that is transforming a former desert into today’s fertile arable land conducive to quality sustainable agriculture.

In Ningxia Autonomous Province, one of the most desert-ridden regions in China (31% of the country’s land is threatened by desertification), concerted efforts to restore much-needed agricultural, human settlement and industrial development are paying off. Through the Ningxia Lingwu Baijitan National Nature Reserve Administration, local authorities have invested in research, the results of which are now visible.
